Critics called this decade a new "golden age of television." In the 2010s, the rise of streaming services and binge-watching rendered the self-contained, standalone episode format of traditional sitcoms obsolete, and overarching storylines became the norm. Changing social attitudes eliminated the old offensive stereotypes and buried the problematic attitudes of previous decades; controversy was replaced by diversity.
