1970s

Jokes about inflation, gas shortages, and high crime rates abound. Sticoms in the '70s pushed the envelope as public opinion became more liberal and network censors eased their restrictions, allowing for characters who were career women, people of color, and gay couples (although still played by straight actors). The general malaise of the decade was reflected in edgier comedy infused with serious discussions about important issues.
