A married couple discover that due to some mix-up, mistake, or deception, they were never legally married.

• The Dick Van Dyke Show: Season 3, episode 3, "Laura's Little Lie" (1963). Laura confesses that she lied about her age and was actually 17 when they got married, meaning their marriage wasn't really legal.
• Gilligan's Island: Season 2, episode 31, "Mr. and Mrs. ???" (1966). The Howells hear over the radio that the so-called reverend who married them is actually a fake, meaning their marriage was never legal.
• GCB: Episode 6, "Turn the Other Cheek" (2012). Amanda accidentally lets it slip that Luke lost Carlene and Ripp's marriage license on their wedding day and never filed it, which means they're not legally married, but Amanda discovers the license in the box where the top of their wedding cake was supposed to be and is forced to take extreme measures to get it filed retroactively in time for their anniversary vow renewal.
