A character has to have their tonsils removed.

- The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: Season 1, episode 6, "The Sweet Singer of Central High" (1959). Dobie gets his tonsils removed, and the "scar tissue" makes him a really good singer temporarily.
- Car 54, Where Are You?: Season 2, episode 5, "Toody & Muldoon Sing Along with Mitch" (1962). Toody learns that everyone in his family has a gravelly singing voice until they get their tonsils out, so he gets a tonsillectomy so he can sing with the precinct's group on TV.
- The Munsters: Season 2, episode 7, "Herman Munster, Shutterbug" (1965). Eddie has to go to the hospital to have his tonsils removed.
- The Mary Tyler Moore Show: Season 1, episode 20, "Hi!" (1971). Mary is embarrassed that she has to go into the hospital to have her single tonsil removed.
- The Bob Newhart Show: Season 4, episode 19, "Bob Has to Have His Tonsils Out, So He Spends Christmas Eve in the Hospital" (1976). The title says it all.
- Mork & Mindy: Season 2, episode 8, "Mork's Health Hints" (1979). Mindy has to have her tonsils removed, and the hospital mixes her up with another patient, so Mork has to find her and stop the operation before it's too late.
- The Nanny: Season 1, episode 15, "Deep Throat" (1994). When Gracie gets sick and Fran takes her to the doctor, it's Fran who ends up having to have her tonsils removed.
