A character wants a nickname, and since no one will give them one, they pick one for themself and try to get it to stick.

George wants a nickname, so he asks Dick to help him come up with one, and he settles on "Dusty," but he changes his mind because he thinks someone calling out "Dusty" to him in a dangerous situation could be fatal if he doesn't realize they're talking to him.
- Wings: Season 4, episode 18, "The Key to Alex" (1992). Lowell is jealous of all his friends who have snappy nicknames, so he spends all day trying to come up with one for himself.
- Seinfeld: Season 9, episode 19, "The Maid" (1998). George wants a nickname, so he decides he wants people to call him "T-bone." At work, he orders a T-bone steak for lunch, hoping it will lead to his co-workers calling him "T-bone," but another guy orders a T-bone too, and everyone starts calling him "T-bone" instead.
