A character is saddled with a vicious, scary dog they can't control. Usually the audience never sees the dog.

- WKRP in Cincinnati: Season 2, episode 18, "Les's Groupie" (1980). Les has a very aggressive pet dog named Phil that he has to dress in heavy padding just to feed.
- Cheers: Season 2, episode 11, "Just Three Friends" (1983). Coach gets a vicious dog from a friend and puts it in Sam's office, hoping it'll be a good guard dog for the bar, but the dog is so vicious that it attacks anyone who comes near it, so no one can go into Sam's office.
- Too Close for Comfort: Season 4, episode 15, "No Patsy, This Kelly" (1984). Monroe aks if his friend "Kelly" can stay with him, and the Rushes agree, thinking Kelly is a person, but when Henry goes into the kitchen in the middle of the night, he discovers that Kelly is actually a vicious dog that corners him and keeps him trapped all night.
- Wings: Season 2, episode 12, "Airport '90" (1991). Fay promises to look after Roy's dog, Brutus, while he's away, and Roy fails to mention that Brutus is a vicious attack dog, but after spending time with Fay, Brutus gets "in touch with his feminine side," and he now enjoys snuggling and wearing bows.
- Seinfeld: Season 3, episode 4, "The Dog" (1991). When the man sitting next to Jerry on a plane becomes ill, Jerry has to take care of his dog, and it terrorizes him and destroys his apartment.
- Wings: Season 4, episode 18, "The Key to Alex" (1992). Joe tells Alex he loves dogs in a poor attempt to show her that he's sensitive, so she asks him to watch her vicious rotweiller, Chopper, for the weekend.
